India has a unique inspiration on the jewlery house Cartier.
Unfortunately the present Cartier Boutique in India
is not in a magnificient Landmark Building,
but as Indias economy is becoming more and more important
who knows this might happen one day ..
Jacques Cartier (1884 - 1941)
has travelled to India many times in the early 20th century
buying stones for his jewellery production and meeting the Maharajas.
They were among the wealthies and most bejewelled men in the World.
fascinating Video about this history of Cartier in relation to India
by Francesca Cartier Brickell, great grand-daughter of Jacques Cartier
Just like the jewels of Aimée de Heeren, the Thurn & Taxis Tiara of Empress Eugenie,
the Romanov jewels or the engagement ring of Princess Soraya
of Iran,
the Patiala Necklace
you see with the Maharaja of Patalia, Bhupinder Sing
has a lot of majic and mystery attached to it.
The original necklace was made of 2,930 diamonds,
five rows of platinum chains
including the 234.65 carats "De Beers"
diamond,
one of the largest diamonds in the world.
1925 Maharaja of Patiala bought the diamond from De Beers
and asked Cartier to
“create a ceremonial necklace worthy enough for a King”.
The necklace was ready in 1928.
The
Maharaja wore it on many official occasions.
1938 the necklace was inherited by his son, Yadavindra Singh.
1948 the necklace disapeared.
1982 the “De Beers” diamond reappeared at a Sothebys auction in Geneva.
1998 part of the necklace were found in a second hand jewelery shop.
Cartier that is restauring it's treasures with Thierry Bousquet bought the iincomplete necklace
and restored it to give an idea of the original.
unfortunately this video is only in french,
it shows historic images of the Maharajas of Patiala
