1926 Birla house was built for the Indian business tycoon
Ghanshyamdas Birla (1894 – 1983).
Mahatma Gandhi was a frequent guest of the Birla family
who invited him to stay at the house 1937 september.
Gandhi stayed there the last 144 days of his life.
1971 the Government of India purchased the house from Krishna Kumar Birla
1973 the house reopened as a museum
in remembrance (Smriti) of Mahatma Gandhi.
